Hard water crusts whatever heats it.

A salt-free scale conditioner is an extra stage fitted after your whole-home filter. It uses template-assisted crystallisation (TAC) to reduce scale build-up from hard water in hot water systems, kettles and shower screens. It doesn’t remove minerals or add salt. We recommend it when your free test reads hardness above about 120 mg/L.

Why it matters

The honest case.

Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium. It’s safe to drink. The problem is heat: when hard water is heated, some of that hardness comes out of solution as scale, which is why it shows up first on kettle elements, inside hot water systems and on shower screens.

SA Water classes 60–200 mg/L as good-quality water and says water above 200 mg/L “can lead to scaling problems on your appliances and taps” (SA Water glossary). Scale starts forming well below that on anything that runs hot every day, so we use a lower trigger of about 120 mg/L, measured at your tap.

Not every home needs it. Hardness matters most in Adelaide, where SA Water’s metro supply zones run about 87–136 mg/L (SA Water). South-east Queensland is softer. Seqwater’s results for the 12 months to August 2026 average about 40 mg/L on the Gold Coast, which is soft, so most Gold Coast homes won’t need this. The Brisbane zone averages about 118 mg/L, just under our trigger, and the Logan, Moreton Bay and Redland zones are softer again (Seqwater Gold Coast, Seqwater Brisbane, PDF reports). If your test reads low, we’ll tell you to skip this one.

Recommended when your test showsHardness above ~120 mg/L as CaCO₃

Or visible scale on kettles and screens, plus a heat-pump or electric storage hot water system.

Who it’s for

  • Your free test reads hardness above about 120 mg/L
  • You already scrub scale off taps, screens or the kettle
  • You run a heat-pump or electric storage hot water system
  • You want scale control without salt, wastewater or electricity
How it works

Three steps, fitted with your system.

  1. Filtered firstYour Whole Home sediment and carbon stages take out grit and chlorine before the water reaches the conditioner.
  2. Crystals formInside the cartridge, TAC media turns dissolved hardness into microscopic crystals that stay suspended in the water.
  3. Flows throughThe crystals rinse through taps and appliances instead of sticking to hot surfaces as hard scale.

An independent study sponsored by the WateReuse Research Foundation (2011) compared salt-free scale devices using a test based on Germany’s DVGW W512 protocol and found TAC performed best of the technologies tested (summary). We don’t quote a percentage, because results depend on your water and how hot your system runs.

What it doesn’t do.

  • It doesn’t soften water. A hardness test reads about the same before and after.
  • It doesn’t remove heavy scale that’s already built up. Descale badly crusted appliances first.
  • You’ll still see water spots where drops dry on glass, though they generally wipe off more easily.
  • It isn’t a health product and doesn’t change how water tastes.
Price and servicing

Priced in your quote after your free water test. Your Water Specialist gives you a fixed written quote, including any extra plumbing. Nothing is signed or paid on the day.

Care Plan. Media cartridge replaced on the schedule set by the manufacturer for your water (typically every few years), done at a Care Plan visit. Serviced under your Care Plan. The first 12 months are included with every system. After that it’s a low monthly fee, confirmed in your quote, and any extra servicing an add-on needs is shown as a fixed line in your quote before you accept. Cancel any time.

Scale conditioner questions

More in the help centre, or see how it fits with our whole-home systems.

Is a salt-free scale conditioner a water softener?

No. A salt-based softener removes calcium and magnesium by swapping them for sodium. A salt-free conditioner leaves the minerals in and reduces how much of them sticks as scale. It uses no salt, sends no water to drain and needs no power.

Do I need it in Brisbane or on the Gold Coast?

Most homes won’t. Seqwater’s 12-month results to August 2026 average about 40 mg/L hardness on the Gold Coast (soft) and about 118 mg/L in the Brisbane zone, with Logan, Moreton Bay and Redland softer. Adelaide is where hardness matters most. Your free test measures your own tap, and we only recommend the conditioner if hardness is above about 120 mg/L or you already have scale problems.

Can I add it without a whole-home filter?

We offer it as an add-on to a Whole Home system, because the sediment and carbon stages protect the conditioner media. If you choose Whole Home Pro, scale control is already included.

Will it make my water taste different?

No. It doesn’t remove minerals, so taste stays the same. For drinking water, the Mineral tap handles taste.

Can I add it later?

Yes. It fits after your existing filter housings. Your plumber adds it in about an hour.
