Clear isn’t the same as clean.

A UV steriliser is a stainless chamber with an ultraviolet lamp, fitted after your sediment and carbon filters. It inactivates bacteria and protozoa in rainwater or bore water as it flows to your taps. It’s for homes drinking tank or bore water, not city mains, which is already disinfected.

Why it matters

The honest case.

Roofs collect more than rain. The national enHealth guidance lists “faecal material (droppings) deposited by birds, lizards, mice, rats, possums and other animals” as a key risk for tank water (enHealth, PDF).

SA Health says rainwater is generally safe to drink if it’s clear, has little taste or smell and comes from a well-maintained system, and that for continuous disinfection “a UV light can be installed” (SA Health).

Where we see it: Adelaide Hills homes, and hinterland and semi-rural properties around Brisbane and the Gold Coast that run on rainwater tanks rather than the town supply. City mains water is already disinfected with chlorine or chloramine. If you’re on mains, you don’t need this.

Recommended whenYour home drinks tank or bore water

Especially with babies, older people or anyone with a weakened immune system in the house.

Who it’s for

  • You drink, cook or brush teeth with rainwater or bore water
  • Your tank is above ground and open to birds and possums
  • You want continuous treatment instead of boiling
  • Your free test finds you’re on a tank-fed or mixed supply
How it works

Three steps, fitted with your system.

  1. Filter firstSediment and carbon stages clear the water. UV only works properly on clear water.
  2. Lamp doseWater passes a UV-C lamp inside a stainless chamber, which inactivates bacteria and protozoa.
  3. Sensor watchesA sensor and alarm tell you if the lamp isn’t working, as the enHealth guidance recommends.

enHealth: “UV lamps have a limited effective life and most need to be replaced after between nine and 12 months”, and a UV system should include “a sensor that indicates when the device is or is not operational.” Ours does both.

What it doesn’t do.

  • It doesn’t filter particles, metals or chemicals. That’s the filter’s job.
  • It leaves no residual disinfectant, so it doesn’t clean your tank or pipes.
  • enHealth notes typical UV doses give only limited inactivation of viruses.
  • It needs power, and the lamp must be replaced every 9–12 months.

UV for tank water questions

More in the help centre, or see how it fits with our whole-home systems.

Do I need UV if I have a whole house filter on my rainwater tank?

If you drink the tank water, yes. Sediment and carbon filters improve clarity and taste but aren’t designed to disinfect. UV is the stage that inactivates bacteria and protozoa.

How often does the UV lamp need replacing?

Every 9 to 12 months, according to the national enHealth guidance. Your Care Plan includes the yearly lamp change.

Does UV change how water tastes?

No. It adds nothing to the water. Taste and smell are handled by the carbon stage.

Do I still need to maintain my tank?

Yes. Keep gutters and screens clean and check the tank for sludge. As SA Health puts it, rainwater systems are low maintenance, not no maintenance.

Is UV worth it on city water?

No. Mains water is already disinfected. We won’t recommend UV unless your home uses tank or bore water.
