How we write and check every guide.
How we research
We start from primary sources and answer the question first. We read the original document, not a summary of it, and we only state a number if we can link to where it came from.
Sources we use
The NHMRC Australian Drinking Water Guidelines; water utilities such as SA Water and Water Corporation; standards bodies (Standards Australia, NSF, the WaterMark scheme); government agencies; the WHO; and peer-reviewed research. Insurer and industry data is labelled as such.
What we won't say
Australian city water meets the national guidelines. We don't call it unsafe, and we don't make health claims about filtered water. Filter claims are limited to what a product's certificate covers. Illustrations are marked "Illustrative".
Review cadence
Each guide shows the date it was last updated. We review every guide at least once every 12 months, and sooner when guidelines, standards or utility data change.
Plumber review
Anything about installation, compliance, flow, pressure or hot water systems is checked by our licensed plumber reviewer before publishing and at each review.
Corrections
If you spot an error, tell us through our help centre. We check it against the source, fix it, and note significant corrections at the end of the guide with the date.
