PFAS are long-lasting man-made chemicals. In June 2025 the NHMRC set Australian drinking water guideline values of PFOS 8 ng/L, PFHxS 30 ng/L, PFOA 200 ng/L and PFBS 1,000 ng/L. Most capital-city supplies test well below these. For certainty, use a NATA-accredited lab test; NSF/ANSI 58 certified reverse osmosis can reduce PFOA and PFOS.
What are PFAS?
Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances: chemicals used in firefighting foams, non-stick and water-repellent products. They break down very slowly, which is why they're called forever chemicals.
What are the Australian limits?
NHMRC, June 2025: PFOS 8 ng/L, PFHxS 30 ng/L, PFOA 200 ng/L, PFBS 1,000 ng/L. One ng/L is one part per trillion.
Where has PFAS been found?
Mostly near defence bases, airports and firefighting training sites, and some smaller supplies. In 2024 Blue Mountains testing made national news; Sydney Water upgraded treatment.
Can a home test detect PFAS?
Not a field kit. It needs a NATA-accredited laboratory. Your Water Specialist can arrange a lab test if you want one.
Which filters reduce PFAS?
Look for certification to NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 listing PFOA/PFOS reduction. Our Mineral drinking stage uses reverse osmosis; your proposal includes its certificate.
