How much does a whole house water filter cost in Australia?

Buying a filter

Short answer

The cost of a whole house water filter depends on your water and your home: what's in your supply and how hard it is, whether you're on mains, tank or bore, how many bathrooms you have, how easy the plumbing at the meter is to reach, and whether you need add-ons like scale control or UV. Whole Home systems start from $3,990 installed, including GST, plumbing and the compliance certificate. Your Water Specialist gives you a fixed written quote after a free in-home water test.

  1. Your water and your home set the price, not a catalogue.
  2. Compare installed quotes that include plumbing, fittings and the compliance certificate.
  3. Ask what cartridges and changes will cost each year before you buy.

What you're paying for

A whole house (point-of-entry) system has three cost parts: the hardware (housings, cartridges, bracket and bypass valve), the licensed installation, and the ongoing cartridges. Online listings usually show hardware only. The plumber's time, fittings and the compliance certificate are a real part of the job, so the installed price is the number that matters.

What drives the cost?

  • Your water quality. Chlorine, chloramine, sediment and taste issues decide which stages you need. Chloramine, for example, needs a catalytic carbon stage with enough contact time.
  • Hardness. Hard water can call for scale control to protect your hot water system, taps and appliances. Soft water doesn't need it.
  • Mains, tank or bore. Rainwater tanks and bores need different treatment from treated town water, often including UV to deal with bacteria.
  • Number of bathrooms. More bathrooms and people means more water flowing at once, so the system has to be sized for higher flow and cartridges work harder.
  • Plumbing access at the meter. Where the meter is, the pipe material, the distance to the house and how easy it is to reach all change the installation work.
  • Add-ons. Optional extras like scale control, UV for rainwater tanks or a smart leak shut-off are only worth it if your test shows you need them.
  • Certification. WaterMark-certified parts and NSF/ANSI-certified cartridges are required for a mains connection. Uncertified imports may look cheaper but aren't a like-for-like comparison.

Comparing quotes

A quote you can compare should list, in writing: the exact model and stages, the WaterMark licence and NSF/ANSI certificates, the rated flow, the installed price including GST, fittings and the compliance certificate, any plumbing extras as fixed line items, and what cartridges and changes cost each year. If a quote is vague on any of these, ask before you sign.

Is a whole house filter worth the money?

It's worth it if what bothers you happens in more than the kitchen: chlorine smell in the shower, scale in the hot water system, sediment after mains works, or a tank or bore supply. If your only concern is how a glass of water tastes, an under-sink filter costs less. Our guide to whole house vs under-sink covers the trade-off.

Questions

How much does it cost to replace whole house filter cartridges?

It depends on cartridge size and how much water your household uses, so ask any installer what cartridges and changes will cost each year, in writing. With Whole Home Water, the Care Plan covers cartridges and changes: the first 12 months are included, then a low monthly fee, confirmed in your quote.

Can I install a whole house water filter myself?

Not on mains water. Connecting to the water supply is licensed plumbing work in every Australian state, and the plumber must lodge a compliance certificate.

Why do you need to test my water before quoting?

Because the right system depends on what's actually in your water and how your home is plumbed. A 30-minute in-home test checks hardness, chlorine or chloramine and sediment, and looks at your meter and pipework, so the quote you get is fixed rather than an estimate. Nothing is signed or paid on the day.
